1.2 million views in a day on YouTube! Quite impressive for a teaser of a thriller that does not have the usual masala of an average Bollywood film. TE3N starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is releasing on 10th of June and the teaser that they released on 5th of May is simply mind-blowing. The fact that it is produced by Sujoy Ghosh; producer, director, and writer of Kahaani (2012), the only authentic thriller that Bollywood has made in the last 2 or 3 decades (or maybe more), automatically raise the expectations. Till recently I was more excited because I thought it is also being directed by Ghosh himself but now I have learnt that it is directed by Ribhu Dasgupta, the director of Amitabh Bachchan’s TV series Yudh. He has directed one more film Michael (2011) starring Naseeruddin Shah and I am not disappointed that he is directing TE3N because Michael was a good film, it may not have worked but it was good and has glimpses of brilliance. I am hopeful about TE3N because in Michael, Ribhu was somehow able to capture the essence of Kolkata.

Coming back to TE3N, the name is Teen meaning Three in English. But for me, the teaser shouts out loudly that there is only one and that is Amitabh Bachchan. Once again after the brilliant Piku (2015), he is out of his comfort zone and looking real. The role and dialogues, it seems, are not tailor-made for Mr. Bachchan and he has a chance to prove once again that he is simply a genius. He conveys a lot of emotions in a single shot and a single expression and that’s mesmerizing. Nawazuddin and Vidya look promising and going by their record, I am sure they will give brilliant performances. It’s refreshing to know that Sabyasachi Chakraborty is also there. Last time we saw him with Amitabh Bachchan in Khaki (2004) as the corrupt politician Deodhar. He is a great actor.

It is the first Hindi film to be shot in the Victorian-era Writer’s Building in Kolkata and it seems Kolkata is back in Bollywood because in recent years we have seen so many good films based on and shot in the great city of Kolkata (e.g. Kahaani, Piku, Byomkesh Bakshi)

Someone told me that TE3N was scheduled to be released on 20th May but is postponed to avoid a clash with Aishwarya Rai’s Sarbjit. One thing that disappoints me is that TE3N is probably the unofficial remake of Korean film Montage (2013). But let’s wait and watch what Ribhu Dasgupta and Sujoy Ghosh offer us on 10th of June. Till then enjoy the teaser.
